Main Entry Points

We pride ourselves in being an inclusive school. Our admissions process is designed to identify families whose children are able to benefit from the balanced and well-rounded education. We try to gain a sense of your son or daughter’s strengths, personal qualities and potential.

Junior School entry to Reception (4+)

Reception to Year 6 are currently based at our Beavers Holt site adjoining Wimbledon Common. Please note that as part of our One School project, the Junior School will relocate to The Downs in Wimbledon by September 2020.

Parents of children considering our Reception class are invited to visit us. Lisa Scoones, Head of Pre-Prep, will be on hand to answer any of your questions. Where possible, we suggest that your son or daughter spends a morning with the current Reception class. If they are at a nursery, we shall request an informal reference to enable us to more effectively shape our provision for your child from day one.

Junior School entry to Year 3 (7+)

Parents with children at pre-prep schools, considering 7+ entry to Year 3, are invited to visit the school initially and discuss their child’s future schooling with Susan Harding, Deputy Head. Where possible, we suggest that your son or daughter spends a day with our own Year 2 class. During their taster day, your son or daughter will sit assessments in English and Mathematics. These are not entrance examinations; they are to help us gain a sense of your child’s level in these important facilitating subjects. No preparation is required for these two short tests. We shall also request a reference from their current school.

Places are sometimes also available in other other Junior School year groups – please contact the Admissions Team for up to date information.

Senior School entry to Year 7 (11+)

The main entry point to our Senior School is into Year 7 (11+). All pupils in our Junior School are offered places in the Senior School as a matter of course, however, we also welcome new faces to the school: boys and girls from local primary schools, prep schools and children relocating with their families to South-West London from abroad.

The first stage in the process is visiting the Senior School on one of our Open Days or for a private tour. Often, tours are led by one of our current senior pupils – we believe that they give a personal and insightful view of the school. During your visit you will also have the opportunity to discuss any questions you may have with Graeme Delaney, the Head.

All prospective pupils will be interviewed. We shall also request a reference from their current school, and a copy of their most recent school report. These will enable us to more effectively shape our provision for your child from day one.

Entry to other year groups

We often have availability in other year groups at different stages of the Hall School Wimbledon journey. In this case, your child will be invited to spend a day with their future classmates. We may request that they sit some informal assessments in English and Mathematics to gain a more accurate sense of their level in these facilitating subjects. No preparation is required for these short tests.

International pupils

International pupils benefit from a broad and exciting curriculum taught by subject specialist teachers who are experienced working with children whose native language is not English. Furthermore, we provide specialist EAL support for pupils who require it. For children unable to visit the school and experience a taster day, we will request references and reports from their current school. We will also require these children to sit an English and Mathematics assessment – this can be completed at their current school.

Entry during the school year

We understand that it is not always possible to start at the beginning of the academic year and children often join Hall School Wimbledon in the Lent or Summer Terms. We try to be as flexible as possible, shaping the school’s pastoral care around your family’s needs.
